This is a full body workout that also builds endurance. It can be done on a stationary bike, or on an outdoor bike.
The workout is from the book "The Ultimate Ride" by Connie Goldman, and involves doing 20-second sprints followed by 10 seconds of recovery. The intervals are repeated eight times for a total of four minutes.
An alternative to this type of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is to do two minutes at a moderate pace, followed by one minute at a hard pace. This can be repeated for as long as you like.
A good rule of thumb when doing HIIT is to make sure your heart rate stays above 80 percent of your maximum heart rate. That means that during the recovery period, your heart rate should not drop below 80 percent of what it was at peak intensity.
